The school was built and opened in October 1905 by the Elkhart School Board on the site of an old cemetery that had been used until about 1895.
It served as a public school from 1905 until 1969, educating generations of children during much of the 20th century.
After closing as a school in 1969, the building stood vacant for five years before reopening as Middlebury Manor with business offices.
The building was fully vacated by 2009 and changed hands multiple times over the following decade.
